Before You Buy New Furniture, Read This

Buying new furniture is always an exciting time, and it can be easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of it all. Whether you’re updating a single room or starting fresh, you can get wrapped up in focusing on styles, colours, and trends. But, before you commit, there are a few key things worth considering, and skipping them can lead you to costly mistakes down the line.

If you want your furniture to look right, feel right, and (most importantly) last, it’s not just about what you buy. Thinking about how it fits into your home and everyday life is a big factor too.

Measure First (Always!)

It sounds obvious, I know, but this one goes first for a reason. It’s one of the most common mistakes when it comes to furnishing a space, believe it or not. A sofa that looks perfect in-store can feel completely different once it’s actually in your living room.

Before buying, take accurate measurements of your space. Make sure to measure twice (and keep note of your numbers — an estimate won’t do you any favours here, trust me), and don’t forget about access points like your doorways, hallways, and stairs. There’s few things as frustrating as a piece that won’t fit through the door.

A great tip is to map out your layout in advance. This really helps you to understand how everything will fit together without overcrowding the room.

Think Beyond the Showroom

Furniture often looks its best in a spacious, well-lit showroom. At home, the same piece might feel larger, darker, or more dominant than you expected. Try to visualise how it will work in your space. Consider your ceiling height, any natural light  you might get during the day, and the surrounding furniture. If you’re choosing a statement piece like a sofa, dining table, or bed, make sure you think about what will sit around it and how it will balance the room.

Taking a photo of your space and referring back to it when you’re shopping can help you to make a more confident decision when you’re in-store!

Think About How You Actually Live

A sofa might look beautiful, but will it work for your day-to-day life? This is where practicality comes in, and believe me, it’s just as important as style.

Be honest with yourself when you think about how you actually use your space. Do you need something durable for a busy household? Easy-to-clean materials? Extra seating for guests? These details will matter more and more to you over time. While you don’t have to completely compromise on style or aesthetics here, it’s important to find a balance that works for your space.

Don’t Rush the Decision

Don’t let the impulse buyer that lives inside you get the best of you! Sometimes, when you find something you like, it can be hard to rein yourself in from deciding on it straight away. Remember, furniture is a long-term investment, and it’s really worth taking the time to get it right.

If you’re unsure, step away and come back to it. Revisit the measurements, think about how it fits in your space, and then (and only then!), reconsider whether it still feels like the right choice after a day or two. A considered decision is always better than a rushed one, especially in this case.

Getting the Scale Right

Proportion plays a huge role in how a room feels. Furniture that feels too large can overwhelm a space, while pieces that are too small can sometimes feel lost and disconnected. Neither is an outcome you want.

Pay attention to how each item relates to the rest of the room. A larger sofa might need a substantial coffee table to balance it out, whereas a smaller one usually benefits from a more compact, streamlined design. The same applies to bedroom furniture and dining sets — you don’t want anything looking like it doesn’t fit.

Getting the scale right creates a sense of balance and makes everything feel more intentional. Both are outcomes you want.

Go Forth and Make Good Choices

Trends have a fickle tendency to come and go, but your furniture should always feel right for you, even after the initial excitement fades. That’s why it’s important to choose pieces that you genuinely enjoy, rather than something that’s popular at the moment, and you’re really only half into. By taking the time to measure, plan, and think about how you live, you can easily avoid the more common furniture buying pitfalls, and make more confident decisions (again, both are outcomes you want!)
